Rare Kidney Surgery Performed on 3-Year-Old at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool

Posted on May 20, 2024May 20, 2024 by S Joseph

A remarkable and rare surgical procedure was successfully performed on a 3-year-old girl at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool, addressing a unique and critical health issue. The young patient had a rare congenital condition where her left kidney had split into two separate parts, leading to severe health complications.

Dr. Y. Manoj Kumar, Head of Department and Senior Consultant Urologist, Andrologist, Infertility Specialist, and Laparoscopic & Transplant Surgeon at KIMS Hospital, explained the situation and the intricate surgery that was performed. “This 3-year-old child presented with a very rare problem where her left kidney was split into two distinct parts. The upper part usually functions at 15%, lower corner Pole 85% unfortunately because of the upper pole urinary pipe blockage it got swollen and severely infected leading to pain and recurrent fevers. After initial consultations at local hospitals, the child’s parents brought her to KIMS Hospital for advanced care.

Upon conducting a thorough kidney scan, Dr. Manoj Kumar and his team identified a severe infection and poor functionality of the upper kidney segment which is 0% function. Given the severity of the symptoms and the ineffectiveness of the infected kidney part, they decided that surgical intervention was necessary.

“To minimize the trauma to the young patient, we opted for a laparoscopic approach. This method allowed us to remove the infected part of the kidney through just two small incisions, which is less invasive and promotes quicker recovery,” Dr. Manoj Kumar explained. “The surgery was particularly challenging due to the need to carefully separate the infected part without damaging the healthy lower portion of the kidney.”

The procedure was completed, and the infected upper part of the kidney was removed without any complications. The lower part of the kidney, now functioning properly, has allowed the child to recover swiftly. The young patient is now free from her symptoms and is doing well.
This successful surgery underscores the advanced medical capabilities at KIMS Hospital and highlights Dr. Manoj Kumar's expertise in managing complex pediatric urological conditions through minimally invasive techniques.
