Bangalore Metro Becomes Lifeline: Aster RV Hospital Performs Life-Saving Transplant with Donor Heart Transported via Namma Metro

Posted on November 3, 2025November 3, 2025 by S Joseph

·         A Heart on Track. A Life Saved. Donor Heart Transported via Namma Metro Enables Life-Saving Transplant at Aster RV Hospital

In a remarkable feat of medical expertise, coordination, and civic collaboration, doctors at Aster RV Hospital in Bangalore successfully performed a life-saving heart transplant surgery on a critically ill patient, offering a renewed chance at life and hope to an ailing heart.

Demonstrating exemplary teamwork, a donor heart was transported from Sparsh Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, to Aster RV Hospital, JP Nagar, using the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) network. The heart covered the distance in just 40 minutes during peak traffic hours. This extraordinary effort ensured that every precious minute was saved, making a successful heart transplant possible and giving a new heartbeat to life.

The operation was made possible through the seamless collaboration of Sparsh Hospital, BMRCL, and the Bengaluru City Traffic Police, who ensured smooth and efficient logistics throughout the mission. This innovative use of the city’s metro system underscores Bengaluru’s growing capacity for advanced, time-sensitive organ transport operations.

The complex operation was led by Dr Divakar Bhat, Lead Consultant – CTVS Surgery, and Dr Nagamalesh U.M., Director – Heart Failure and Transplant, Aster Hospitals Bangalore, alongside cardiothoracic specialists and members of the anaesthesia team, who provided critical support. The medical team worked seamlessly to transplant the heart, and post-surgery, the patient’s condition has been reported as stable. The swift coordination was supported by Ms Reena, Transplant Coordinator at Aster RV Hospital, whose prompt and effective management during peak traffic hours played a crucial role in the timely transport and successful transplant procedure. The recipient was a critically ill patient suffering from end-stage heart disease. Following the evaluation, the patient was registered for a heart transplant.

When the matching donor heart became available at Sparsh Hospital, the Aster RV transplant coordination team swiftly activated an emergency transport plan. With the collaboration of BMRCL and city traffic authorities, the heart was moved efficiently through the Namma Metro network, bypassing road congestion and ensuring optimal organ viability upon arrival.

Dr Divakar Bhat said, “Every minute counts in a heart transplant. Utilising the Metro for organ transport represents a major advancement in our city’s emergency medical infrastructure. This achievement highlights the expertise of our transplant team, the importance of public support, and the power of timely coordination. Most importantly, it was made possible by the noble and selfless decision of the donor and their family.”

Dr Nagamalesh U M added, “The patient was battling heart failure at a very advanced stage, and time was truly running out. Seeing him get a new heartbeat today reminds us that medicine is not just about science, it’s about hope, humanity, and the collective will to save a life.”

This inspiring operation stands as a reminder that when a city comes together — doctors, transport authorities, and civic communities, every heartbeat can find a new chance at life.

Aster RV Hospital extends its heartfelt gratitude to Sparsh Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, BMRCL, and the Bengaluru City Traffic Police for their outstanding support and collaboration in making this life-saving mission possible.
